URBAN YOUTH CREW
Urban Youth Crew is a Western Australian Hip Hop Crew consisting of Aboriginal, Maori, English and Non-Indigenous Australians. Our aim is to promote integration, tolerance, acceptance, participation and culture through hip hop dance. Since forming in September 2011 Urban Youth Crew has had a whirlwind ride with over 200 professional performances.
Nelle Hokianga our Principle Choreographer for Urban Youth Crew, FX Burlesque and Fresh Flava has over 20 years of dance experience. Together with her mother Rusty Hazel, these two ladies have opened their own Hip Hop and Breakdance School "One Mob Studios" in February 2014 in Perth's northern suburb of Joondalup which is the new home of Urban Youth Crew.
Urban Youth Crew’s signature in most routines is to perform Tradition Aboriginal Dance with the Didgeridoo. We want to showcase our amazing young indigenous performers and breakdown stereotypes from the community about young Aboriginal People. What better way to do this than represent the Aboriginal Culture through dance. We are very proud of what Urban Youth Crew and One Mob Studios have achieved in such a short amount of time and our goal is to keep reaching different communities throughout Perth, Rural WA and beyond.
ONE MOB STUDIOS
One Mob Studios was opened to allow a community connection centre for people to come and learn hip hop and break dance styles in a safe, inclusive and fun environment. Currently with 70 students ranging from 2-65 OMS offer classes Monday through to Saturday and are always taking new enrolments.
Nelle and her team of staff have devoted their time, knowledge and experience to provide outstanding classes for children and adults alike from complete beginners to professional performers from all walks of life.
Teacher Jerome Garlett who are also an amazing part of Urban Youth Crew as a hip hop and break dancer and lead tradional Aborginal performer is outstanding role modeland upcoming choreographer. Together with Alex Winnall both Jerome and Al have created some amazing choreography pieces for Urban Youth Crew and One Mob Studios.
We not only provide classes in Perth but also Australia wide. When teaching in the community we aim to ensure everyone walks away learning something from our classes and having the confidence to always “Have a Go” and to not only try new things in dance but in all life experiences. We spend a lot of time teaching in the Wheatbelt Towns of Western Australia but also have been sort after in the Gascoyne, Goldfields and Great Southern regions of Western Australia.
